New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index climbed 1.01% to close at 11,835 on Wednesday, rising for the second straight session, buoyed by gains in technology and other large-cap stocks. Investors are now awaiting the US PCE price index, the Federal Reserve's favoured gauge of inflation, slated for release on Friday, which could provide further clues on the Fed's rate cut trajectory. On the domestic front, New Zealand's Treasury Department is expected to further reduce spending and raise revenue to support weak economic conditions and meet the government's debt obligations, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing Treasury Secretary Caralee McLiesh. Among index heavyweights, notable gains were seen from Meridian Energy (3.6%), Spark NZ (1.5%), Mercury NZ (1.7%), Mainfreight (2%), and the A2 Milk (2.7%). Conversely, retailer KMD fell 2.8% as analysts downgraded forecasts following last week's weak trading update.
