German import prices fell 0.4% year-on-year in May 2024, easing from a 1.7% drop in April, and were almost in line with market estimates of a 0.3% drop. It was the 15th consecutive period of falling import prices but the smallest decrease in the current sequence. The decline in intermediate goods (-2.6%), particularly starch and starch products (-30.7%), pig iron, steel and ferroalloys (-10.1%), and paper and cardboard (-8.1%), was capped by a softer fall in energy prices (-0.1%). Within energy, costs dropped for natural gas (-10.8%), electricity (-18.2%), and hard coal (-12.6%), nearly offset by increases in crude oil (11%) and mineral oil products (7.3%). Meanwhile, costs rose for agricultural products (5.8%), consumer goods (1.3%), and capital goods (0.2%). Excluding energy prices, import costs were also 0.4% lower than in the same month last year. Monthly, import prices were stable after a previous 0.7% rise.
