Passenger car registrations in the European Union dropped 5.2% yoy to 1 million units in March 2024, reversing from a 10.1% jump in the previous month. It was the first decline in the year due to the impact of the Easter holidays. Sales across most EU markets reported falls, including Germany (-6.2%), Spain (-4.7%), Italy (-3.7%), and France (-1.5%). Meanwhile, battery electric car registrations in the EU shrank 11.3% to 134.4 thousand units, accounting for 13% of the market, slipping from 13.9% in the same month of 2023. Among the three largest BEV markets, Belgium and France registered double-digit increases of 23.8% and 10.9%, respectively, while Germany faced a significant drop of 28.9%. For the first quarter of the year, car registrations grew by 4.4% yoy, reaching nearly 2.8 million units, with new battery-electric cars posting a 3.8% rise to 333 thousand units.
