The HCOB Italy Construction PMI fell to 48.5 in April 2024, down from 50.3 in the previous month, signaling the first decline in activity since September last year. New orders dropped for the first time in seven months, with some panelists blaming poor demand and increased uncertainty. Among the subsectors, civil engineering was the worst performer, followed by commercial activity and residential activity. Constructors continued to hire more staff in April, however employment growth was the slowest in over a year. Supplier performance also deteriorated, while input buying fell modestly. On prices, cost pressures intensified as input price inflation accelerated, attributed to higher raw material and transport costs. Lastly, business confidence reached its highest in nearly two years, amid reports of incoming new orders and contracts, in particular related to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
